More on the Psyche : Sondra Ray explains the Hawaiian's understanding of how our psyche is constructed, which closely parallels what Freud determined [and makes me wonder if Freud had some input on this from a Hawaiian source.] This is the Hawaiian Huna philosophy which understood that each person had three souls, the Low Self, the Middle Self and the Higher Self. The Low Self is the equivalent of Freud's unconscious. In Serge King and Max Freedom Long, it is called the "subconscious." The relationship between the three souls of the human psyche is not straightforward according to the Hawaiians. This issue will give information about the Low Self, and the next issue the Middle and then later the Higher Self. This may bring understanding of the difficulty we have all lived with from a recalcitrant and childish subconscious running our lives from hidden past lives or childhood issues. One of the reasons I have been so excited about EFT is that it directly taps into the subconscious and clears it. Trying to do that from the conscious mind (Middle Self) is not at all easy as many people have found. Yes positive affirmations work for many people, but only if the subconscious is clear on that issue. If it holds guilt or shame or other beliefs, then nothing changes.
From Pele's Wish p. 33 " The Lower Self is called the "Unihipili".. ..
- It is like a computer in that it simply follows orders.
- It is comparable to a servant.
- It maintains the integrity of the body and oversees its operation.
- It can remember but has only elementary reasoning power..somewhat comparable to the reasoning capacity of an animal.
- It accepts and responds to suggestions.
- Also called the "Basic Self", it is the mind that never sleeps.
- Its consciousness is like that of a child.
- Because it follows orders, it is important to develop a loving relationship with it, according to Serge King (1983).
- It must be freed of all complexes of guilt or sin so that it will do its part happily whenever it is asked to send our prayers.
- It must be told by the Middle Self that it is forgiven, cleansed and greatly loved. Only when freed in this way can it express love. Where there is no love, there is no energy to make prayer work. It will be ineffective.
- Communication and contact with the Higher Self is impossible when the Lower Self is in opposition to the Middle Self
- Alone, it has no capacity for discernment and no discretion. For that reason, it requires guidance, love, caring and concern. Explain to your Unihipili that this new system is preferable to others already programmed, such as old rituals and ceremonies and especially those based in religion.

Jaideva Singh: in Pratyabhijnahrdayam: The Secret of Self Recognition. p.137 "TURIYA, [is] the fourth state of consciousness. ...Every man's consciousness is in three states -- jagrat (waking), swapna (dreaming), susupti (deep sleep). These states are exlusive. When a man is in the waking consciousness, he has no dream or deep sleep consciousness. When he is dreaming, he has no waking or deep sleep consciousness. When he is in deep sleep, he has no dreaming or waking consciousness. In every man, there is a fourth (turiya) state of consciousness also which is the witness of the other three states. Turiya is a relative term. It is in relation to the other three states that it is called turiya or fourth. There is no succession in turiya as there is in the other three states. It is ever present as the witnessing consciousness of the three states. The ego limited by body, prana and manas has no experience of turiya, although it is always present in him as the background of all the three states. When avidya (the primal ignorance) is removed,--then only man has the experience of turiya consciousness. That is the essence of our consciousness which is experienced when the present limitations are transcended. ....Just as a string holds together various flowers in a garland, even so it holds together the other three forms of experience and runs through them all. It is integral awareness. But it is other than the three states of waking, dream and sleep. "
